PLA (Polylactic Acid) is a biopolymer or bioplastic that is derived from natural, annually renewable resources.
In most cases, the starch from plants such as corn, cassava and sugarcane is processed into a repeating chain lactic acid, and, after the polymerisation process, manufacturers are then able to create a range of versatile products including food service ware and food packaging that is able to perform well in both cold and hot applications, depending on the item.
When diverted from landfill, PLA products can biodegrade in commercial composting facilities, making them the ideal sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional, non-compostable plastic food service products.
